Klunklerz

Klunkerz is a fond look back at the cyclists of Califonia’s Marin County in the 1970’s. These hardcore bicycle enthusiasts turned the world upside down by taking their adventures off-road. Their shared passion and obsessive tinkering led to a multi-billion dollar industry, a healthy pastime for the masses, and an Olympic Sport.

“The titular vehicles of Savage’s aptly-named documentary are, in fact, pre-1941 bicycles, gamely converted into mountain bikes. In his documentary Savage takes a fond glimpse at this international craze” The New York Times

Featuring interviews with the pioneers of the sport, as well as more ‘obscure’ characters that influenced them. What started off as a way for these athletes to cross-train for their road racing careers, and have fun with their friends, reinvigorated the global cycling industry.

All the participants in this film are deeply dedicated to the advancement of the bicycle as fun and functional transportation in modern society, as well as a tool for empowering the poverty stricken worldwide.

“Savage’s funny and often poignant film looks at how a bunch of hippies in Northern Califonia developed a unique style of off-road bike riding through collaboration and competition … worth checking out, even if you’re not a bike nut.” USA Today

According to a 2008 studied titled The Economics and Benefits of Mountain Biking “One in five Americans age 16 and over now ride a mountain bike each year … with the total riding population at close to 50 million riders.” The modern mountain bike is rugged enough to go anywhere, but efficient enough to ride gracefully through the city streets.
